KATI Drilling Oy uses Vuolearning to onboard and train their employees and to track completions.
KATI Drilling Oy is a mineral exploration company offering various drilling and measurement services, such as diamond drilling and rock chip sampling, and related additional services. KATI Drilling serves mining companies and takes samples from soil and bedrock. They have around 170 employees. Their office is located in Rautio, Kalajoki, but diamond drilling takes place mostly in Finland and Sweden. They have employees all around Finland.
In this customer story, we interviewed Human Resources Assistant Suvi Kääntä, who is responsible for onboarding new employees.
KATI Drilling's employees include for example drillers, assistant drillers, and measurers. New employees are onboarded in Rautio and additionally, they complete an onboarding program in KATI Vaskooli (KATI Drilling's name for their Vuolearning platform).
The nature of the work at KATI Drilling requires extensive live training. Practical onboarding is carried out at the working station, but the learning platform is useful for going through employment-related matters, for example. The employees receive a lot of information at the beginning of the employment, and it is helpful that they can return to the materials later on in the learning platform.
KATI Drilling has personnel around Finland and the work is carried out around the clock. It is therefore difficult to gather the entire staff in one place for example for training, and this is where the digital learning platform helps.
KATI Drilling began looking for a new learning platform because their previous learning environment did not have all the necessary features. Kääntä was involved in the implementation project of the learning platform. Their team reviewed different providers and compared services. They chose Vuolearning because the platform is clear and includes features they need, such as import tool for existing materials and the possibility to track users' completions. The platform is also simple to use for both content producers and end users.
They have been using Vuolearning since autumn 2024. The platform implementation went well, even though introducing a new system always brings some excitement. Their launch was ambitious: when the platform went live for end users, a company-wide training was published at the same time.
Gradually, materials from the old system have been transferred to Vuolearning. During the transfer, they have also reviewed and updated the old material.
KATI Drilling onboards and trains their own staff and external contractors in Vuolearning. The platform includes for example a learning path for new employees, company-wide trainings, and safety trainings.
Before Christmas and the summer holiday season, the company offered trainings for the entire staff on the platform, with tailored paths for different employee groups. The platform clearly includes different user groups - such as drilling crew, administrative team, and maintenance - who each have their own customized trainings.
Verification of completed completions and trainings is also important. KATI Drilling works in an industry where their customer might require that an employee has completed a specific training in order to be able to perform certain tasks. KATI Drilling then needs to be able to verify that the employee has completed the required training. With Vuolearning, this is possible.
Employees have responded well to the platform, and overall, everything has gone smoothly. Occasionally, feedback comes in that the employees cannot find a course or do not remember how to get to the platform. KATI Drilling offers a lot of courses to its employees, and these are shared to certain user groups. Therefore, Kääntä has made an instructional video about what can be found in the platform and how to search for courses using certain words to make it easier to find the right content. They will also have their own domain, which will make the platform easier to find - as employees sometimes still recall the old system's domain.
Most of KATI Drilling's Vuolearning users are mobile users. This has been taken into account when creating learning material. Kääntä reviews all the materials on a mobile device before publishing, because what looks good on a computer, might not necessarily look good on a phone screen. When creating content, they must pay attention to instructions and text. This means for example breaking text into smaller sections so that it is easier to read on a mobile device, or adding instructions to tap images to view them larger.
Related to mobile use, the company hopes that in the future, they could send text messages from the platform for example about newly published trainings, as text messages reach mobile users more reliably than email.
Kääntä mentions performance tracking, learning paths, possibility to group users so that they can be offered customized trainings, and automatic reminders - which free up HR's time - as Vuolearning's most valuable features. Additionally, the import tool, which allows uploading materials such as PDF instructions to the platform, is useful as it makes content creation easier and faster.
"I can warmly recommend Vuolearning to other companies as well. The platform is user-friendly and it's easy to create good-looking learning material," says Kääntä.
